Lessons from the Danish Ban on Feed-Grade Antibiotics

چکیده
iglets ntibiotics effects In June of 2003, McDonald’s Corporation announced that it would prohibit its direct suppliers from using antibiotics that are important in human medicine as growth promotants in food animals after 2004. The company also created a purchasing preference for companies that work to minimize antibiotic use. This announcement, coupled with recent Food and Drug Administration guidance on the same issue, will put pressure on the US livestock industry to consider alternatives to feed-grade antibiotics. Denmark recently banned the use of feed-grade antibiotics in pork production and has been joined in this action by countries in the European Union (EU). The ban was implemented first at the finishing stage and then at the weaning stage. Denmark’s recent experiences with the withdrawal of antibiotics from feed can help us to better understand and anticipate the consequences of a similar action in the United States.

Lessons from the Danish Ban on Antimicrobial Growth Promoters
The purpose of this report is to analyze the Danish ban on antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) in order to conclude suggestions for stakeholders in the US to similarly restrict AGPs from the meat supply chain. The analysis includes: 1) a description of the Danish pork industry; 2) the application of veterinary medicine in Danish foods; 3) a review of the stakeholders behind the ban; 4) an ass...

متن کاملAntimicrobial resistance of emerging foodborne pathogens: status quo and global trends.
Emerging foodborne pathogens are challenging subjects of food microbiology with their antibiotic resistance and their impact on public health. Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella spp. and Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) are significant emerging food pathogens, globally. The decrease in supply and increase in demand lead developed countries to produce animal products with a higher efficiency....

The poultry industry has been accompanied by the emergence of a large variety of pathogens and bacterial resistance due to the increase in production scales and the use of Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP). As a result, poultry become more sensitive to harmful bacteria such as Escherichia Coli, Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter jejunum. There are considerable numbers of...

The FDA approved the ionophore monensin as feed additive for cattle in 1976, and within a few years most feedlot cattle in the United States were being fed this antibiotic (Russell and Strobel, 1989). Feed efficiency improvements as large as 10% were documented (Goodrich et al., 1984), and in vitro studies and in vivo incubations showed that monensin was altering ruminal fermentation (Dinius et...
